Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Bring water and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan.
  2. Gradually whisk in grits.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 20-25 minutes.
  4. Stir in butter and pepper.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in cheese and milk until melted and smooth.
  6. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For creamier grits, use whole milk.
  • You can add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a little heat.
