Ingredients

- 4 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup stone-ground grits
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup milk
Instructions
- Bring water and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan.
- Gradually whisk in grits.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 20-25 minutes.
- Stir in butter and pepper.
- Remove from heat and stir in cheese and milk until melted and smooth.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- For creamier grits, use whole milk.
- You can add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a little heat.
- Stone-ground grits provide the best texture.
