Description

A recipe for traditional Italian Christmas cookies that are simple to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in the softened butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg, vanilla extract, and milk.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes.
  9. Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets, about 1 inch apart.
  10. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Once cool, dust generously with powdered sugar.

Notes

  • You can add lemon or orange zest to the dough for extra flavor.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
