Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes, until foamy.
  2. Stir in sugar, egg, melted butter, and salt.
  3. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough and turn onto a lightly floured surface. Roll to ½-inch thickness.
  7. Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or two different sized round cutters.
  8. Place donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover lightly and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Carefully place donuts into hot oil, 2-3 at a time. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  11. Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  12. Glaze or coat with sugar while warm.
