Description

This recipe guides you through making a traditional apple strudel, perfect for a cozy dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 pounds tart apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk warm water, vegetable oil, and egg. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a warm, damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  3. While the dough rests, prepare the filling. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins (if using), and walnuts (if using). Mix well.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. On a clean, floured surface or a large pastry cloth, roll out the dough into a very thin rectangle, about 20×30 inches. The dough should be thin enough to see through.
  6. Brush the melted butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the butter.
  7. Arrange the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 2-inch border on all sides.
  8. Carefully roll up the strudel tightly, starting from the long side. Pinch the ends to seal.
  9. Carefully transfer the strudel to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and the filling is tender.
  11. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Ensure your dough is very thin for the best texture.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar based on the sweetness of your apples.
  • Serve warm with a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of vanilla ice cream.
