Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • You can substitute sour cream or plain yogurt for the buttermilk.
  • Add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips or nuts for variation.
  • Dust with powdered sugar or frost once cooled.
