Description

A classic family favorite bread recipe that is simple to make and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, until foamy.
  2. Stir in the salt and vegetable oil.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  7. Cover and let rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until nearly doubled.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F (93°C).
  10. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush the top of the loaf with melted butter immediately after baking.
  • You can add herbs or seeds to the dough for extra flavor.
