Homemade Orange Cinnamon Rolls

Description

Recipe for sweet rolls flavored with orange zest and cinnamon.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 teaspoon of sugar in a bowl. Let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in melted butter, remaining sugar, and egg into the yeast mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
  6. Spread the softened butter over the dough. Sprinkle evenly with orange zest and cinnamon.
  7. Roll the dough tightly along the long edge into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal rolls.
  8. Place rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden brown.
  10. While rolls bake, whisk together powdered sugar and orange juice to make the glaze.
  11. Remove rolls from the oven and immediately drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls.

Notes

  • Use fresh orange zest for the best flavor.
  • If the dough is too sticky, add flour one tablespoon at a time while kneading.
