Description

A simple recipe for delicious button-shaped cookies.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Optional: Food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. If using food coloring, divide the dough and color as desired.
  7. Roll small portions of dough into balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass.
  8. Use the end of a wooden spoon or a straw to create two small holes in the center of each cookie, resembling buttons.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • You can decorate the cooled cookies with icing to resemble threads going through the button holes.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
