- 1.5 lbs chicken pieces
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 teaspoons ginger paste
- 2 teaspoons garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the ginger paste and garlic paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and garam masala. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Add the chicken pieces and cook until lightly browned on all sides.
- Pour in the diced tomatoes and water. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Cover the pot, reduce the heat to low, and cook for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.
- Stir in the plain yogurt and salt. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring gently. Do not boil after adding yogurt.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
Notes
- For a thicker gravy, reduce the amount of water used.
- Adjust the red chili powder amount based on your preferred spice level.
