Description
Make simple, flavorful cheese crackers at home using basic ingredients.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 tablespoons cold water
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the shredded cheese until evenly distributed.
- Add the cold water one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
- Form the dough into a flat disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out thinly, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Use a small cookie cutter or knife to cut the dough into desired cracker shapes.
- Place the crackers on the prepared baking sheets.
- Brush the tops lightly with the beaten egg wash. Prick each cracker once or twice with a fork.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
- Let the crackers cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder or onion powder to the dry ingredients.
- If you prefer a crispier cracker, roll the dough slightly thinner before cutting.
- Store cooled crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
