Description
A simple recipe for a flavorful smash burger.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices American cheese
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles
Instructions
- Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions.
- Season each portion generously with salt and pepper.
- Preheat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Butter the cut sides of the hamburger buns and toast them on the skillet until golden brown. Remove from skillet.
- Place one beef portion onto the hot skillet. Immediately smash it down with a spatula to create a thin patty.
- Cook for 1-2 minutes until the edges are browned and crispy.
- Flip the patty and immediately place a slice of cheese on top. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the patty is cooked through.
- Repeat steps 5-7 for the remaining beef portions.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on the bottom half of each bun, adding your desired toppings, and topping with the other half of the bun.
Notes
- For best results, use 80/20 ground beef.
- Do not overwork the ground beef when forming the patties.
- Smash the patties quickly and firmly for a good sear.
