Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
- 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter or vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter (or oil), and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Lightly flour a clean surface and turn out the dough. Gently knead a few times until smooth.
- Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two different sized circular cutters to cut out donut shapes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place a few donuts at a time into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pot.
- Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- While still warm, toss the donuts in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh baking powder.
- Do not overmix the dough, as this can lead to tough donuts.
- Maintain the oil temperature for even cooking.
- Donuts are best enjoyed fresh.
