Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter (or oil), and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Lightly flour a clean surface and turn out the dough. Gently knead a few times until smooth.
  5. Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two different sized circular cutters to cut out donut shapes.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully place a few donuts at a time into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pot.
  8. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  9. Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  10. While still warm, toss the donuts in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.
  11. Serve immediately.
