Description

A sweet and slightly spooky caramel popcorn mix perfect for Halloween.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups popped popcorn
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup black food coloring gel
  • 1/4 cup orange food coloring gel

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, butter, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Let it boil for exactly 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract quickly. The mixture will foam up.
  5. Pour the hot caramel over the popped popcorn in a very large bowl. Toss quickly to coat evenly.
  6. Divide the coated popcorn into two separate bowls.
  7. Add the black food coloring gel to one bowl and the orange food coloring gel to the other. Mix each bowl until the popcorn is evenly colored.
  8. Spread the black popcorn onto one prepared baking sheet and the orange popcorn onto the second baking sheet in a single layer.
  9. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir the popcorn gently. Return to the oven for another 15 minutes.
  10. Let the popcorn cool completely on the sheets before breaking it apart.

Notes

  • For extra creepiness, add plastic spiders or candy eyeballs after the popcorn cools.
  • Store the cooled popcorn in an airtight container at room temperature.
